Walking loops in Grand Place, Brussels
The guild houses ring the square in competitive gilding — each facade trying to outshine its neighbor, and collectively they achieve something that Victor Hugo called the most beautiful square in Europe, which for once isn't hyperbole. The gold leaf catches any available light, even on Brussels' frequent grey days. The Hotel de Ville's Gothic spire anchors one end, and the chocolate shops on surrounding streets fill the air with something approaching cocoa-flavored atmosphere. Every two years they carpet the square in flowers, which is peak Belgium.
