The water tower on Kollwitzplatz once held darker purposes, but now families picnic at its base and farmers' markets fill the surrounding square on Saturdays. Prenzlauer Berg's renovation is complete — prewar apartments scrubbed clean, courtyards planted with lavender, excellent coffee on every corner. The stroller density is remarkable. It's easy to mock the gentrification, but walking these wide, linden-tree-lined streets on a summer evening, the golden light hitting restored stucco facades, mockery feels beside the point.
