Walking loops in Tapiola, Espoo
Finland's great garden city experiment, built in the 1950s with the optimism of people who believed architecture could improve daily life — and largely proved it. Aalto's cultural center anchors the plan, surrounded by green space that feels intentional rather than leftover. The pedestrian paths weave between buildings and nature with a logic that rewards walking. Tapiola still works as designed: human-scaled, leafy, slightly utopian. The swimming hall and library sit where the planners put them, still exactly right.
