Walking loops in Baixa, Lisbon
The earthquake of 1755 erased the old city, and the Marquis of Pombal rebuilt it in a rational grid — straight streets, uniform facades, earthquake-resistant construction that was revolutionary for its time. Praca do Comercio opens to the river in a gesture of scale and symmetry. The Elevador de Santa Justa lifts you from the grid to the hills above in a wrought-iron tower that Eiffel's school of engineering would recognize. The geometry gives Baixa a clarity that the rest of Lisbon beautifully lacks.
