Alfama walking loops — Lisbon's oldest hillside maze

The lanes are steep enough to qualify as staircases, and the tram rattles through gaps between buildings that seem too narrow to permit it. Fado drifts from open doors after dark — raw, melancholic, and somehow perfect for streets this old. The miradouros offer views across red rooftops to the Tagus estuary, and the light here does something specific to whitewashed walls and blue azulejo tiles that photographs can approximate but never replicate. Laundry lines connect neighbors across alleys. Cats own every sunny ledge.
