Walking loops in Central Market, Riga

Five massive Zeppelin hangars — originally built for German airships — now house one of Europe's largest markets. Each pavilion specializes: fish, meat, dairy, produce, gastronomy. The fish pavilion alone is worth the visit, its counters displaying smoked eel, sprats, and salmon with the seriousness these things deserve in a Baltic city. Outside, the open-air market extends into stalls selling everything from wool socks to pickled garlic. The scale is Soviet in origin, the contents emphatically Latvian, and the atmosphere is unperformable — this is how people actually shop.
