The two Belvedere palaces face each other across a formal garden that slopes downward toward the city, and the symmetry is the kind of thing that makes you understand why people built palaces. Klimt's Kiss lives in the upper palace, smaller than expected and more luminous. The botanical garden alongside is wilder, less composed, full of labeled species and wandering cats. Walking the grounds in morning light, before the tour groups arrive, the gravel crunches underfoot and the fountains have the place to themselves.
