Walking loops in Anafiotika, Athens
Whitewashed houses with blue shutters and flowering courtyards tucked directly beneath the Acropolis walls — built by workers from the Cycladic island of Anafi in the nineteenth century who simply recreated home. The neighborhood is tiny, maybe forty houses, connected by paths that feel more Santorini than Athens. Cats doze on warm stone steps, and the Parthenon looms directly above like an improbable neighbor. Finding Anafiotika requires knowing it exists; leaving it requires wanting to, which takes longer than expected.
