Walking loops in Christianshavn, Copenhagen
Christiania's freetown occupies one end of the neighborhood — handbuilt houses, community rules, a social experiment approaching its sixth decade. Beyond it, Christianshavn is pure Copenhagen canal district: houseboats, brick warehouses converted to apartments, and the Church of Our Saviour's external spiral staircase winding to a golden tip that gets narrower than you'd like. The canals here are quieter than Nyhavn's, and the light on the water in late afternoon makes photographers out of everyone.
