Walking loops in Retiro, Madrid
The Crystal Palace sits on a lake in the middle of the park, its iron-and-glass structure reflecting water and sky in a way that makes every photo look retouched. Retiro is Madrid's collective backyard — rowboats on the lake, runners along the gravel paths, families under the shade of massive old trees. The Fallen Angel statue is supposedly the only public monument to the devil in the world, which Madrid treats as a point of pride. Sunday mornings here are sacred in the secular sense.
