Walking loops in Salamanca, Madrid
The grid streets were planned in the nineteenth century for aristocrats, and the neighborhood has maintained that standard with disciplined consistency. Calle Serrano's luxury shopfronts alternate with galleries showing contemporary Spanish art, and the apartment buildings along Calle Goya have the massive wooden doors and marble lobbies of old money. The tapas here are plated rather than piled, and the wine lists are longer. It's Madrid at its most composed — pressed shirts, polished shoes, excellent posture.
