Cross the Vistula and the city changes register. Praga survived the war largely intact, which means the buildings are authentically old and authentically worn — bullet-scarred facades, courtyard workshops, prewar signage still faintly visible on brick walls. Zabkowska street has become the social corridor, its bars and restaurants occupying spaces that retain their industrial character. Murals cover entire building sides. Praga is Warsaw's east bank making its own argument, unpolished and increasingly impossible to overlook.
