Walking loops in Stare Miasto, Warsaw
Every building in Warsaw's Old Town is a reconstruction — the originals were systematically destroyed in 1944 and rebuilt from paintings, photographs, and memory. The UNESCO listing honors that act of collective will. Walking the square, the facades look authentically seventeenth century, which they are and aren't simultaneously. The Mermaid statue holds a sword and shield, which tells you everything about Warsaw's relationship with its own survival. The effect is uncanny: a place that is genuinely old and genuinely new at the same time.
