Walking loops in Jewish Quarter, Budapest
Ruin bars colonized the abandoned buildings of the old Jewish Quarter, and Szimpla Kert started it all — a courtyard strung with bathtubs and traffic lights and the accumulated weirdness of two decades. The Dohany Street Synagogue is the largest in Europe, its Moorish Revival interior vast and ornate. Street art covers every available surface between the two. The neighborhood holds memorial and celebration in the same blocks, which creates a texture that's unique to this part of Budapest and difficult to replicate.
