Calanques walking loops — Marseille's coastal limestone fjords
The Calanques are Marseille's backyard secret — limestone fjords cutting into the coast, turquoise water at the bottom, pine trees gripping rock above. Getting to Sormiou or Morgiou means a proper descent on rocky trails, and the Mediterranean at the bottom is cold enough to reset your entire nervous system. The Grotte Cosquer, with its 27,000-year-old cave paintings now underwater, sits sealed beneath the cliffs. Above ground, the garrigue scrubland smells of rosemary and thyme in the heat.
