The market square does what Finnish market squares do — anchors the town with produce stalls, flower vendors, and at least one person selling smoked fish from a van. But Turku's version sits where the river meets the commercial grid, so the water is always in peripheral vision. The hall market indoors offers year-round cover. Mornings are best, when the vendors are still arranging and the coffee hasn't run out. The cathedral towers over everything from upriver, keeping watch.
