Töölö wraps around its bay like a parenthetical thought — contained, reflective, slightly set apart. The waterside path from Finlandia Hall north toward the opera house is one of Helsinki's great ten-minute walks: Aalto's marble on one side, reeds and black water on the other. The residential streets behind hold sturdy 1930s apartment buildings and an unusual density of cultural institutions. People jog here. People also sit on benches doing absolutely nothing. Both feel right.
