Kallio walking loops — Helsinki's granite-hill neighborhood
Kallio makes you earn your walk. The granite hills pitch upward from Hakaniemi, and by the time you reach the church tower on Sointulankatu, your calves know it. But that's the deal here — effort rewarded with character. Corner bars spill onto sidewalks by mid-afternoon, wheat-paste art layers over older wheat-paste art, and the neighborhood's working-class bones show through every gentrified surface. Nobody's trying to impress you. That's what makes it impressive.
